‘Victims Stories’ film a stark reminder of what is at stake – Currie

29th September 2022 - Emer Currie

A film that features personal stories about violence and murder during the Troubles, and victims ongoing fight for truth and justice, is a stark reminder of what is at stake if the British Government’s Legacy Bill proceeds, a Fine Gael Senator has said.

‘The Victims’ Stories’ was viewed by TDs and Senators in Leinster House yesterday.

Senator Emer Currie said the film is “raw, emotional and powerful”.

“It’s heart-breaking to think how far victims, from all communities, have to go to fight for their rights, for truth and justice for their loved ones whose lives were claimed by various sides during The Troubles,” the Fine Gael Senator said.

The film production is part of a campaign in opposition to the Northern Ireland (Legacy and Reconciliation) Bill.  Among those who attended the Leinster House meeting were Raymond McCord, Cathy McIllvenny, Michael Gallagher, Susie McKerr, Paula Rainey, Kate Nash and Julie Hambleton.

“This legislation is for the benefit of the perpetrators, not the victims. It’s not about reconciliation, but control. The British Government’s control of the truth, of the justice system and the narrative around the Troubles.

“We must continue to build momentum around our complete opposition to it. The role and the voice of victims has been taken away in this process. We must support them and fight with them to ensure victims are at the heart of any process on legacy.

“Foreign Affairs Minister Simon Coveney who met with the victims on this and on other occasions also re-reiterated that the Irish Government cannot possible accept or support this Bill.

“This film is a stark reminder of what is at stake,” Senator Currie said.

The film is produced by Mobile Media and was due to be shown in at Queen’s University Belfast tonight.
