Welcome funding boost for Grey Abbey Conservation Project – Heydon
8th June 2014 - Fine Gael Press Office
Fine Gael Kildare South TD, Martin Heydon, has welcomed the announcement by Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Jimmy Deenihan TD, that almost €67,000 is to be granted to Kildare’s Grey Abbey Conservation Project. The grant is part of a €347,200 funding allocation to five local authorities for urgent conservation and preservation works to five heritage structures of national significance.
“This funding allocation of almost €67,000 is really good news for the Grey Abbey Conservation Project.
“The funding has been granted for urgent conservation and preservation works to five heritage structures of national significance around the country and Grey Abbey definitely falls under this category.
“The restoration of the structure at Grey Abbey is a really positive move for Kildare Town and the wider area. It is just one of the many architectural and heritage gems in the area that are of interest to tourists. Given the position of Grey Abbey adjacent to the Kildare Village shopping outlet centre, it could form part of a great day out and be very attractive to tourists.
“This funding announcement is testament to the work of the Grey Abbey Conservation Project committee who have been so dedicated to this project. This funding will go a long way towards completion of the project to turn Grey Abbey into a wonderful resource to be enjoyed by locals and tourists alike”.
