Big boost to the Irish language in Cork – Buttimer
5th September 2017 - Fine Gael Press Office
Increased use of the Irish language in Cork City will have a positive impact on the local community and economy a Fine Gael Senator has said.
Leader of the Seanad, Jerry Buttimer has welcomed the announcement that an Irish language plan is to be prepared and implemented in Cork City over the next nine years.
The Fine Gael Senator said: “As a Gaelgóir and a strong advocate for the Irish language I am delighted that Cork City has been chosen to prepare and implement this plan.
“It will allow the entire community, including organisations from the voluntary, public and private sectors, to work together to support our national language.
“The aim of the plan will be to increase the use of the Irish language throughout Cork City from family homes to schools and businesses.
“Considering the Irish language is a cultural asset to the country, this plan has the potential to promote a positive image of Cork City and attract cultural tourism to the area that would enhance the local economy and community,” said the Cork Senator.
A period of one month will now be given to organisations to apply to Foras na Gaeilge, as the organisation responsible for preparing the plan over two years and implementing it over a further seven years.
Senator Buttimer continued: “I would encourage organisations from many different sectors to apply to lead this plan.
“Cork City now has a fantastic opportunity to be the leading urban hub for the Irish language throughout the country and should take this chance to promote it as a living and breathing language that is central to the Cork community and the Irish identity.”
