Statement by Minister for Justice Helen McEntee TD, Fine Gael Deputy Leader, in relation to former Minister Gemma Hussey
26th November 2024 - Helen McEntee, TD
Gemma Hussey was a pioneering politician who was inspired to enter public life by her involvement in the women’s movement.
Gemma was a trailblazer for women in politics. She was the first woman to hold the position of Minister for Education and was the only woman serving at Cabinet in the period 1982-87. She also served as Minister in the departments of Social Welfare and Labour.
Women in politics today owe a lot to Gemma and the female politicians of her generation.
Gemma gave great service to the people of Wicklow and Ireland in her long and distinguished career.
After her time in Irish politics, Gemma made a significant contribution to the European Women’s Federation, helping to empower women in the former eastern bloc countries.
My sincere condolences to her family and friends, especially her children Rachel, Ruth and Andrew.
Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam.
