Vital that public has say on priorities for Ireland’s EU Presidency – Lynch

5th November 2025 - Senator Eileen Lynch

A public consultation on Ireland’s priorities for the Presidency of the Council of the European Union next year is an important milestone in preparing for one of the most significant responsibilities Ireland will undertake on the European stage, a Fine Gael Senator has said.

Senator Eileen Lynch said: “Ireland’s Presidency of the Council of the EU in 2026 offers a unique opportunity to shape the European agenda at a time of major change and challenge. It will allow us to demonstrate leadershp, guide the work of the European Council, and showcase Ireland’s values of openness, partnership, and commitment to peace and democracy.

The Senator highlighted that the public consultation will allow individuals, businesses, civil society, and community organisations to have their say on the themes and priorities Ireland should advance during its six-month term, commencing in July 2026.

“This Presidency will not and should not just belong to Government — it will belong to the Irish people. The consultation process ensures that ideas from every corner of the country can contribute to shaping how Ireland leads in Europe in 2026,” Senator Lynch added.

Ireland last held the Presidency in 2013, and its effective leadership during that period — including securing EU agreement on CAP Reform and brokering the 2014-2020 Multi-Annual Financial Framework with the European Parliament — earned widespread respect across member states. Senator Lynch said the 2026 Presidency will be another chance to demonstrate Ireland’s capability and influence within the Union.

“This will be an enormous logistical and diplomatic undertaking — coordinating hundreds of meetings, representing the EU Council in negotiations, and welcoming European ministers and officials to Ireland. But more importantly, it’s an opportunity to reaffirm our reputation as a constructive, solutions-focused member state.

“I encourage everyone with an interest in Ireland’s future in Europe to engage with the consultation process

“Ireland’s place is at the heart of Europe. This Presidency gives us a chance to strengthen that bond and to help shape the Europe we want for the next generation.”
