Byrne welcomes progress on Richmond Barracks restoration project
27th March 2015 - Fine Gael Press Office
Fine Gael TD for Dublin South Central, Catherine Byrne, has welcomed the progress on the Richmond Barracks restoration project for the Ireland 2016 commemorations.
“This has been a crucial week for the Richmond Barracks restoration project with the lodging of Part 8 planning permission with Dublin City Council on Thursday. As a member of the Richmond Barracks Advisory Committee, I am delighted that the refurbishment works are on track to be completed by early next year in time for the 1916 centenary.
“€3.5 million has been allocated for this restoration project. It is a good news story, a very positive project for the area, and I commend everyone who has put so much work into this restoration project to date.
“I recently brought the Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Heather Humphreys to Richmond Barracks and she got a great appreciation of the historical significance of the building. Richmond Barracks is the location where the leaders of the 1916 Rising were court-martialled before their execution in Kilmainham Gaol. It is a highly significant historical site and is clearly valued by the people of Inchicore and wider Dublin.”
