Moment to build a rejuvenated capital city starts now with Taskforce action – Geoghegan

Government’s greenlight today for the report of the Dublin City Taskforce has the real potential to deliver the positive change that our capital needs, a Fine Gael TD has said.
Party spokesperson for Dublin, James Geoghegan TD, was speaking as the Report of the Interdepartmental Group (IDG) and their 10-year comprehensive Roadmap for Delivery of the Taskforce Report was approved and published by Government today.
Deputy Geoghegan said: “This is the moment we stop talking down Dublin and start building it back up.
“Vacant buildings, derelict sites, and neglected streets have dragged our city down for too long. This roadmap finally puts in place the tools to turn that around.
“I also welcome the identification of funding streams to ensure delivery of actions in this roadmap,
which will rejuvenate the city centre for all those who work, socialise and visit there.
“Key elements of the plan include:
- Redevelopment of the GPO complex as a flagship mixed-use site of cultural and national importance
- Major upgrades to Moore Street, Parnell Square and the Fruit & Vegetable Market
- Accelerated precinct improvements on O’Connell Street and surrounding areas.
- A new delivery vehicle within Dublin City Council to fast-track projects and cut through red tape.
“Crucially, this isn’t just about buildings – it’s about community,” Deputy Geoghegan said. “From better flat complexes to new supports for family hubs like Hill Street, this is about delivering real change for people living and working in the city.
“I’m thankful to Tánaiste Simon Harris for establishing the Taskforce and their report has practical actions which have the potential to be transformational for our great city.
Deputy Geoghegan also praised the plan’s focus on unlocking investment and ending inertia.
“Dublin doesn’t need more reports. It needs delivery. With this roadmap, and the political will to back it, we now have a chance to get it done,” Deputy Geoghegan concluded.
