CETA ratification will present golden trade opportunity for Ireland to offset U.S. tariffs – Clendennen
3rd April 2025 - John Clendennen
The ratification of the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) will be important to Ireland’s response to new U.S. tariffs on the European Union, a Fine Gael TD has said.
Deputy John Clendennen said renewed efforts in expanding trade relationships to ensure continued market access for Irish products will be crucial in the months ahead.
Deputy Clendennen said: “The Tánaiste today reaffirmed the government’s commitment to working closely with EU counterparts to mitigate the effect of U.S. tariffs. He underlined the significance of emerging free trade agreements, including the EU-Canada Comprehensive Trade Agreement (CETA), which will provide Irish exporters with new opportunities.
“The government remains dedicated in its approach to securing trade diversification and ensuring Irish businesses continue to thrive in a changing global economy.
“Ireland’s prudent management of its public finances allows us to now navigate these challenges strategically. It is reassuring to hear that markets such as Singapore, Vietnam and India are also being explored.
“The legislative process to ratify CETA will be complete by the end of the year, which gives a clear planning timeline.
“This is about seizing opportunities even in the face of challenges.
“With prudent management and a forward-thinking approach, we can ensure continued success for Irish businesses, farmers and workers.”
