Fine Gael unveils ambitious plans to build a healthier, more active Ireland through sport
27th November 2024 - Fine Gael Press Office
Minister Alan Dillon today (Wednesday) set out Fine Gael’s sports policy aimed at making Ireland a more active, inclusive, and healthier country.
Fine Gael is committed to ensuring that everyone, regardless of age, ability, or background, has access to participate in sport and exercise facilities. From increasing participation rates to promoting physical activity among young people and older adults, Fine Gael aims to create a lasting legacy of health and wellness for generations to come.
Minister Alan Dillon said:
“Our goal is to ensure that 50% of the adult population in Ireland is actively participating in sport, regardless of age, ability, or socioeconomic status. We will make sport more accessible to people with disabilities, close the current participation gap, and increase support for coaches, volunteers, and sporting organisations.
“We will also introduce gym membership tax relief to make fitness more affordable and accessible for all.
“Fine Gael believe that every town with over 1,500 people should have a minimum range of sport and leisure facilities, including all-weather pitches, tennis courts, and skating parks. We will conduct an audit of all sporting facilities to ensure that every community can have access to the tools they need to stay active and healthy.
“International sporting events are a tremendous opportunity to showcase Ireland to the world; by hosting major events, we will stimulate the economy, create jobs, and inspire young people to get involved in sport. Fine Gael will work to attract high-profile international sporting events, such as the UEFA Euro 2028, the Rugby World Cup, and the AIG Women’s Open.
“Fine Gael are committed to ensuring that Ireland’s sporting infrastructure and major events are environmentally sustainable. New measures will provide incentives for sports facilities to adopt renewable energy and sustainable practices. Additionally, the party will focus on improving governance within sporting organizations to ensure greater transparency, gender equality, and protection against abuse.
“Sustainability is at the heart of our sports strategy. We will ensure that all major sporting events and facilities align with our national climate goals, while also promoting gender equality and safeguarding the integrity of sports governance.
“Fine Gael’s plan is a roadmap for the future of sport in Ireland, a future where everyone, regardless of age, ability, or background, has the opportunity to lead an active and healthy life,” Minister Dillon concluded.
