Garda transfer policy needs to be reviewed – Roche

6th March 2025 - Fine Gael Press Office

Greater flexibility and fairness in Garda transfer policies are required to address the challenges being faced by long-serving members of An Garda Síochána who are struggling to secure positions closer to their families, a Fine Gael TD has said.

Deputy Pete Roche said: “Today in the Dáil, I raised case of a Garda who has dedicated nearly six years to serving in Dublin but has been unable to transfer closer to their home in Galway, despite following all required procedures. This officer, currently on maternity leave, faces a difficult situation—either spending extended periods away from her young child, commuting a 370km roundtrip daily or leaving the force, all while managing the financial strain of maintaining a home in Galway with no accommodation in Dublin.

Gardaí are the backbone of our communities, yet many are left in limbo, unable to secure transfers that would allow them to continue serving while being present for their families.

“I support the significant efforts underway to recruit new Gardaí, but more focus is needed to retain and support existing members. Welfare concerns are a consistent worry, with a number of Garda personnel engaging with the Employee Assistance Service. Additionally, there is no clear financial support for officers required to maintain housing in two locations, while waiting for transfers.

“Community policing starts with ensuring that those who serve our communities are supported in their roles. A more balanced and transparent approach to transfers will benefit not only Gardaí, but the communities they protect.”

Deputy Roche has committed to continuing to raise this issue with the Minister for Justice and will advocate for a review of Garda transfer policies to ensure fairness, clarity, and efficiency in the process.
