Intel is not just a key employer but a key strategic international partner for Ireland – Neville

25th April 2025 - Fine Gael Press Office

Everything must be done to ensure Intel remains in Leixlip and its production facilities are at the forefront of the worldwide semiconductor market, a Fine Gael TD has said.

Deputy Joe Neville has expressed concern following the announcement of the Intel quarterly results and the memo to staff from new CEO Lip Bu-Tan on his plan for the company.

Deputy Neville said: “Although no specific losses have been announced, a focus on the need for a reduction on operating costs to the company has been outlined. With 4,900 direct employees and more indirect employees based in Leixlip we need the Irish Government to do everything it can to engage with the IDA, Intel senior management, and the new CEO Lip Bu-Tan to highlight the strategic importance of Intel to Ireland and Europe.

“On top of the 15% cuts in 2024 this is a serious for concern for Intel and speaks to the serious challenges that Intel faces in the global semiconductor race with companies such as NVIDIA and TSMC. These challenges are part of the current international semiconductor discussion with the USA, China and Taiwan but for the people of Kildare North this is all too real.

“Intel has been the cornerstone of Ireland’s technological growth and has played a key role in developing Irelands position as a global leader in the field.

“It’s also important to acknowledge that we’ve seen €17billion investment since 2017 that has ensured that the Leixlip plant will remain central to the firm’s turnaround efforts to challenge those competitors.

“While I don’t want to speculate, it is important that we are prepared and that workers are kept informed of any decisions made in the coming months.

“I remain in regular contact with Intel and in the last two weeks alone have met with Intel twice and I will continue to work with the team there, along with my colleague Minister Peter Burke.

“As someone who grew up in Leixlip, I have seen Intel develop first hand and know the key role that it plays in our country and across the globe. I am committed to working hard to ensure Intel remains deeply embedded in Leixlip and North Kildare”, concluded Deputy Neville.
