Minister Flanagan expresses concern for prison officers after Portlaoise attack
8th March 2015 - Fine Gael Press Office
Fine Gael Laois-Offaly TD and Foreign Affairs Minister, Charlie Flanagan, has expressed his concern after two prison officers were hospitalised following an attack at the Midlands Prison in Portlaoise.
Minister Flanagan, who lives in Portlaoise, stated: “As a Portlaoise-based TD, I have worked closely with prison officers over many years and I am acutely aware of the challenging nature of their work and the dedication of the officers. I am appalled at the violence that occurred at the Midlands Prison today and the fact that two officers required hospital treatment. I wish them a speedy recovery.
“I welcome the investigation underway at the prison. I commend the officers for bringing the situation under control in an efficient and effective manner.
“I will continue to work with prison officers in Portlaoise, as their local TD, to address their concerns.”
