14th December 2015 - Fine Gael Press Office
Fine Gael Dublin South Central TD, Catherine Byrne, has said that a new interactive tourism project for Dublin will help bring the city’s history alive for locals and visitors alike.
“Twelve new interpretive panels to promote key historic sites in Dublin are being launched today (Monday). This interactive project will bring Dublin’s history alive for locals as well as visitors and will encourage greater engagement with the city’s stories and past.
“These panels will be situated along the ‘Dubline’, the cultural and heritage trail that runs from the city centre out to Kilmainham Gaol and Courthouse. As a result, these interactive panels will make a big impact on Dublin South Central and will highlight the rich history of our communities. Their locations include; Kilmainham Gaol & Courthouse, Royal Hospital Kilmainham, St James’s Gate on Thomas Street West, the National College of Art and Design on Thomas Street, the City Walls at High Street and Tailor’s Hall.
“The tourism and hospitality industry employs an estimated 205,000 people in this country and generates over €3.5 billion per year.
“Any promotion of our heritage sites in the south inner city will help local people and businesses to benefit from tourism. The importance of this is highlighted by Fáilte Ireland figures showing that 55 international tourist visits helps support one tourism job, 1,000 additional tourists support 18 jobs in the tourism industry, and every €1 million of tourist expenditure helps to support 34 tourism jobs.”
