North Quays Redevelopment a top priority for Waterford City – Minister Coffey

24th October 2015 - Senator Paudie Coffey

Fine Gael Waterford Minister Paudie Coffey has said that the North Quays Redevelopment is a top priority for Waterford City.  Minister Coffey said the site is a brownfield site that has never reached its full potential; which is completely unacceptable given its position adjacent to the heart of Waterford City.

“Over the last number of months, I have been engaging with Waterford City and County Council and my Ministerial Colleagues to put a focus on the North Quays and secure commitments in respect of the redevelopment.  I am pleased that the redevelopment of the site was included in the National Capital Plan 2015-2021.

“The National Capital Plan states the following:

‘There are also proposals to develop and regenerate Waterford City North Quays to support jobs and tourism in the region. Support will be provided under this Exchequer Programme for this development when details are finalised.’

“This site is of Regional and National strategic importance and any comments that suggest that it is not a priority are not helpful and only serve to undermine the potential redevelopment of the site.  I will continue to work and engage with Local Authority Officials to drive this plan.

“The redevelopment of the site has the potential to create hundreds if not thousands of jobs during the construction phase and attract new investment into the City in the longer term.  The importance and value of this site for Waterford can’t be underestimated and I will be treating it as a top priority and will be using my influence as Minister to ensure that this project is progressed.”
