O’Dowd calls for city status for Drogheda

Fergus O’Dowd, Fine Gael TD for Louth and East Meath, is calling for city status for Drogheda.
“The latest data released by the Central Statistics Office has shown us that for the second census in a row, Drogheda is the largest town in Ireland.
“The population of the town is now more than forty thousand, an increase of more than 6% since 2011.
“Drogheda has a rich history and heritage and I believe that the people of Drogheda must be in charge of their own destiny.
“I have been an advocate of city status for Drogheda for many years. I think given its location and room for expansion, it is inevitable that Drogheda will be given city status.
“It makes perfect sense to give Drogheda city status now, Drogheda needs the full resources of a city council in order to plan effectively for the future and to manage its growth.
“As our population grows we need joined up thinking for our large urban towns. I believe giving Drogheda self-determination would be enormously beneficial in the long run.”
