Sinn Féin’s socialist dream would be a nightmare for Irish people – Twomey
19th January 2015 - Fine Gael Press Office
“Sinn Féin’s socialist dream would nationalise the banks and tax families to the hilt, resulting in a nightmare for Irish people”, says Fine Gael TD for Wexford, Liam Twomey.
“Gerry Adams has been busy this weekend telling anyone who will listen of his plans to keep AIB in national ownership. Although when pushed on the subject during an interview with RTÉ’s Richard Crowley, he didn’t seem sure if it would be a red line issue for Sinn Féin if they were negotiating a coalition Government. Luckily this should never be an issue given they have ruled out coalition with just about everyone.
“Sinn Féin’s vision sees us retaining AIB in national ownership, whereas the Government’s responsible plan has been to restore AIB to growth and sell it when the time is right to ensure that tax payers get their money back.
“It’s with Sinn Féin’s tax plans that we see their socialist dream turn into a nightmare for the Irish public. In their alternative budget issued just before Budget 2015, Sinn Féin proposed €1.7 billion of tax increases in total. They voted against the Government’s Budget which reduced taxes by €650 million. We are the only Party with a sustainable plan to reduce the tax on work and ensure that people have a little more in their pockets, which in turn, stimulates the economy to continue growing. Let’s not throw away the progress and allow Sinn Féin to take us back to the dark ages.”
