Fianna Fáil in retreat on the economy – Harris

22nd September 2015 - Simon Harris TD

Minister of State for Finance and Fine Gael TD for Wicklow-East Carlow said today (Tuesday) that Fianna Fáil are in retreat on the economy.

“Fianna Fáil have abandoned all pretence of being interested in the economy. They prefer to engage in political theatrics to disguise the fact that they have no economic plan to secure the recovery. Clearly they don’t want to to debate the economy because of their catastrophic record and total absence of any economic plan.

“Fianna Fáil are now in retreat on the economy.

“They can’t agree on any policies so instead they focus on opposition for opposition’s sake. This is the only thing that unites them.

“Tax is one example where they are totally at sea. Last year they opposed the Government’s income tax and USC cuts. Now they say they say they might favour a USC cut but they can’t reconcile that position with their calls for ever-higher spending. It’s the same old Fianna Fáil.

“They have no jobs plan and in four and a half years have not outlined how they would add one job to the economy. This in stark contrast to our Action Plan for Jobs, which has resulted in over 125,000 new jobs.

“The opposition rightly should hold the Government to account but it should also offer a policy alternative. Fianna Fáil has failed to offer any economic policies. They have failed in opposition, just as they failed in Government. They are a risk to the recovery.”
