McEntee congratulates Meath man Downey on securing IFA role

7th December 2013 - Sarah Meade

Fine Gael Meath East TD, Helen McEntee TD, has today (Tuesday) congratulated Eddie Downey, from Slane in Co. Meath, on his successful election as the 14th President of the Irish Farmers Association.

“I am delighted to see a Meath native being elevated to the position of IFA President, and I have no doubt that Eddie Downey will take to this new role like a duck to water.

“Eddie has a very strong track record within the IFA, having worked in a number of positions within the organisation over the last 20 years. Furthermore, his family farming background means he fully understands the needs of modern farmers.

“Eddie played a particularly strong role during the recent fodder crisis, which presented a severe challenge to farmers across the country earlier this year.

“The Irish agri-food sector is going from strength to strength, particularly with the reopening of the Japanese market for Irish beef. As such, Eddie Downey is taking on his role as IFA President at a very important juncture for Irish agriculture.

“On a personal note, I am delighted for Eddie and his family. They have put an incredible amount of work into this campaign, along with the huge team Eddie had behind him. I wish him every success in his new role.

“I look forward to working with Eddie in the years ahead to ensure that the interests of Meath farmers – and the entire agricultural community – are being best served.

“I would also like to pay tribute to Jer Bergin, who ran an excellent campaign which he and his team should be proud of.”
