Mary Howard

Local Election Candidate

Electoral Area: Ennis

Clare Council

Mary Howard

Mary was elected Cathaoirleach of Clare County Council in June 2020, for the year 2020/21.

She has campaigned tirelessly on many significant women’s health issues. Her work has resulted in securing a comprehensive and professional breast check service for the women of Ennis. As well as this, she has strongly advocated the highly successful cervical cancer vaccination programme for teenage girls, in which 2000 teenage girls have received this lifesaving vaccine.

Mary has a strong sense of locality and community, and volunteers actively within the Tidy Towns and many other local charities and community projects. Mental health issues such as suicide prevention, addiction, depression and anxiety are of utmost concern to her and she is working to help eliminate this scourge on Irish families. The hospitality sector is a significant contributor to the economy of Ennis and Mary understands the particular difficulties associated with this; and so, she has campaigned for the maintenance of the 9 percent VAT rate, and also has lobbied successfully to eliminate the scrappage of the travel tax which has resulted in the multiplication of flights in and out of Shannon airport.

A positive night-time economy to ensure that Ennis is family and tourist friendly, as well as a safe place to visit is high on Mary’s agenda. She is committed to taking measures to maximise the natural resources enjoyed by Ennis and to exploit the opportunities afforded to Ennis due to its close proximity to Galway and Limerick.
