Ruairí Keyes
I’ve been selected by Fine Gael to run in the 2024 local elections. I’m from Athlone town, and I’m for Athlone town. I’m passionate about my community having volunteered with Coosan Foróige, Westmeath Civil Defence and a former member of An Garda Síochána. I am currently serving as a reserve soldier with the Irish Defence Forces while also serving on the board of Directors for a mental health charity.
MY PRIORITIES
Housing – Ensuring more is done to secure more affordable homes in Athlone whilst also tackling dereliction.
Stronger Safer Communities – Fighting for more Gardaí to be assigned to the Athlone district. I’m acutely aware of the impact to our community where there is a reduction in Garda numbers. I also believe an operational Garda Superintendent needs to be restored to Athlone.
Ensuring the Athlone urban area is reduced to 30km/h and where applicable, installation of traffic calming measures. I am committed to securing more investment in infrastructure improving our footpaths, roads and public amenities.
SMEs – I will campaign for a lowering of the VAT rate having worked in the hospitality sector. Lobbying for more grant funding to be made available to support local business.
