Electoral Area: Mullingar

Westmeath Council

Gerry Heery

Geery Heery, a steadfast advocate and Fine Gael candidate, brings unwavering commitment to the upcoming local election. His roots trace back to the tranquil shores of Lough Sheeve in Cullionbeg, where he honed his athletic prowess through football and hurling. The GAA pulses through his veins, shaping his character and dedication.

Educationally, Geery’s journey led him to St. Mary’s CBS in Mullingar, where he laid the groundwork for a lifelong passion for learning. In 1984, he proudly graduated from University College Dublin as a qualified teacher. His path then took him across the Atlantic to Boston, where he met his wife, Mary. In 1997, they returned to Ireland, and Geery embarked on an extraordinary tenure at St. Brigid’s Special School in Mullingar.

For over 25 years, Geery has devoted himself to shaping young minds within the special education community. His experiences have granted him profound insights into the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities and their families. In 2010, he furthered his expertise, completing a Master of Arts in Special and Inclusive Education.

Geery’s Priorities:

  • Empowering People with Disabilities: Leveraging his background in special education, Geery aims to promote essential services and create employment opportunities for people with disabilities. He recognises the importance of supporting their families as well.
  • A New Primary School for Mullingar: Geery advocates for the establishment of a much-needed primary school in Mullingar, ensuring quality education for the community’s children.
  • Stronger Safer Communities: Geery pledges to collaborate closely with local community organisations, championing their initiatives and addressing their concerns.
  • Boosting Mullingar’s Appeal: Inspired by the positive exposure Mullingar received during the Fleadh, Geery commits to working alongside business, cultural, and sporting organisations to position Mullingar as an attractive tourist destination.
