New legislation will tackle the number of break-ins carried out by repeat offenders – Conway

Fine Gael Senator and Seanad Spokesperson on Justice, Disability and Equality, Martin Conway, has today (Monday) welcomed the publication of the Criminal Justice (Burglary of Dwellings) Bill 2015, by the Minister for Justice and Equality, Frances Fitzgerald.

“The new measures will tackle the distressing issue of burglaries by keeping repeat burglars off the streets.

“It will require a court which decides to impose custodial sentences for multiple burglary offences committed within a 12 month window, to impose such sentences consecutively.

“In addition the new legislation will allow courts to refuse bail for offenders who have a previous conviction for domestic burglary, coupled with two or more pending charges.

“The Government is committed to dealing with the whole area of recidivism.  This legislation, coupled with the proposed new Bail Bill, which is also due to be published shortly, demonstrates the clear determination of the Minister to deal effectively with repeat offending.

“I look forward to debating this important legislation in the Seanad shortly.”
